Civil Engineering
Graduate Program General Information
The Department of Civil Engineering offers a program of study leading to the degree of Master of Science with Major in
Civil Engineering (MSCivE). The mission of the program is to meet the advanced civil engineering educational
needs of recent graduates of undergraduate engineering programs, practicing engineers, and those non-engineering
professionals wishing to redirect their career paths. Graduates of the program possess these attributes or educational outcomes:
- Knowledge in civil engineering and related subjects significantly beyond the baccalaureate level.
- Ability to independently conduct research or a significant practice-oriented project in civil engineering.
- Ability to communicate their ideas and results in written, oral, and graphical forms.
These educational outcomes result from successful completion of a well-planned, rigorous set of courses and a
major capstone experience (either a thesis or practice-oriented project).
Students wishing to continue their education but not pursue a formal academic degree are welcome to take graduate courses
with the appropriate technical preparation.
Admission Requirements
All applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students meeting the following standards are normally admitted to
the MSCivE program:
- Possess a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering or closely related engineering field (e.g., environmental engineering, construction engineering, structural engineering, etc.). Students with degrees from foreign institutions must have their credentials evaluated by an approved evaluator (contact the Graduate College ).
- Achieved a 3.0 average (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work.
- Achieved a combined score on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) of 1000, with a minimum of 550 in the quantitative section. GRE scores cannot be more than 5 years old.
- Have demonstrated proficiency in both written and spoken English. Students with undergraduate degrees from foreign institutions are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based).
- Produce three letters of recommendation attesting to the student's potential for graduate studies in civil engineering.
- Abide by the graduate admission requirements of the university as published in
the university catalog.
Any deviation from the above standards (except the 6th) may result in a conditional admission to the program. Subsequent
full admission to the MSCivE program is based upon the successful completion of undergraduate engineering background coursework, satisfactory completion of a limited number of graduate courses, remedial work in written and/or spoken English, or any other action as deemed necessary and appropriate by the of the Civil Engineering Faculty.
Degree Requirements
The degree of Master of Science with Major in Civil Engineering (MSCivE) is awarded to the candidate that has:
- complied with University graduate policies and regulations,
- satisfied the University's graduate degree requirements, and
- satisfactorily completed the appropriate Program of Study for the degree option selected.
