ASCE SEI Award

Florida Atlantic University civil engineering alumnus Fernando Martinez, M.S. (CE), E.I., was awarded the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Young Professional Scholarship.

The ASCE SEI Young Professionals Committee awards ten scholarships annually to young engineers to give them an opportunity to participate at the Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Congress. Martinez was awarded a Tier 3 scholarship that provides complimentary registration to the 2016 event that will be held in Phoenix, AZ. Attendees will have networking opportunities and gain knowledge about new and emerging trends in their profession.

"I am honored to be selected as a recipient of this award and very thankful for the guidance I received during my undergraduate and master's degree studies at FAU," said Martinez.

Martinez, a structural engineer associate, is currently involved in structural remediation and design projects in the South Florida area. Martinez is constantly exposed to challenging projects in which he has to analyze the lateral wind resisting systems of existing buildings and determine if they need to be enhanced to meet the requirements of the applicable Florida Building Code. His participation in ASCE’s Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Congress will allow him to expand his knowledge base by learning from industry leaders.

To be eligible for the award recipients must be young professionals (35 years or younger) in both industry and academia who plan to become more involved with SEI. Full time students are not eligible for the scholarship.
